Form Play Studio
"Generalists by experience. Specialists by choice."
Form Play is a UK brand animation studio. They help independent thinkers earn recognition through character-led animation and creative assets that do the heavy lifting.
Founded by Mark Davis and Catharine Pitt, Form Play specialises in hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation and distinctive character systems that bring clarity, meaning and consistency to brand communications. Their work prioritises story, craft and recognition — creating assets designed to last across platforms, campaigns and time.
Clients include Google, Sephora and Comedy Central, alongside growing brands creating strong foundations of distinctive assets. What connects them is the ambition to create something the brand can continue building from. Alongside its commercial work, Form Play supports the wider creative community.
Studio Projects:
Laboratoire Garancia (Product Campaigns):
Laboratoire Garancia is a French beauty and skincare brand that harnesses the secrets of plants and nature to create unique, premium products. Form Play were commissioned to create a series of animations designed to spark curiosity. For example for one of them they had to evoke the hot volcanic springs, rich in sulphur (a key ingredient for the Sulphurous Marabou Paste), they chose to use an owl to guide the audience and take them from Parisian pharmacy to the soaring heights of the Canary Islands. Created using frame techniques, the challenge was making the fluid owl movements believable within the 3d environment.
The Great Traffic Test (De Grote Verkeerstest):
Form Play Studio were commissioned to create a show leader, along with other on and off-air animated assets for Nickelodeon’s ultimate road-safety quiz 'De Grote Verkeers Test' (The Great Traffic Test). The purpose of the show is to educate and empower young Dutch and Flemish teenagers as they prepare for their National Traffic Safety Exam. The goal was to create the assets to support this mission in a fun and engaging way. Animated using frame by frame techniques in TVPaint, the fast movements and dynamic camera angles reinforce the excitement felt when learning to ride a bike in a busy urban environment, with Clara's fluid blue hair acting as a devise to steer the eye through the animation.
Motion Hatch- Client Quest:
Form Play Studio helped Motion Hatch launch their new online course 'Client Quest', with a playful explainer-style animation to attract their core audience of freelance motion designers. They also created a library of assets for the course, including logos, badges and animated loops to celebrate progress. Central to the explainer video is the lonely astronaut character, but in keeping with the light-hearted tone of the project, we wanted to bring some playfulness to the character. A range of animation techniques were used, from frame by frame for the light, bouncy movements of the astronaut (TVPaint) to 3d modelling for the spaceships (Blender).
